The Path to
Wellness

Maximising Your Potential

If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.

Thomas A. Edison

The goal of achieving wellness is simple but getting there can be difficult. We work with you to do one or more of four things:

  • Maximize your wellness potential.
  • Turning back the clock biologically.
  • Working with difficult, hard to treat conditions.
  • Maximizing your performance.

This is a different concept of wellness. It is not about waiting to get unwell, it is about finding out your current wellness status and what you can do to maximise it. Over a dozen scientifically validated and innovative tests give a true indication of your current state of wellness, including your biological age, how different parts of your body are functioning, levels of inflammation, absorption of nutrients, levels of toxicity, your body’s ability to digest and eliminate and much more. The test results provide the basis for a treatment plan to address your body’s weak spots and maximise your wellness. This is wellness and anti ageing from the inside out. You will look and feel younger. If you are suffering from a specific condition, the causes underlying the symptoms are identified and addressed, allowing your body to heal itself and bring about wellness.

How many people do you know who have died suddenly of a heart attack or more slowly of cancer or who have suffered from a chronic condition. Many of these people once thought that they were “healthy” and it couldn’t happen to them and yet it did. The tragedy is not only in their loss of life or health but in the toll it takes on those around them. Yet, the signs of disease were present in their bodies long before they manifested as a disease. They just never took the time to look for them.

Have you wondered why today, when we are spending more on heath-care than ever before, we are the sickest we have been in the history of our species. This website will explain the causes of disease; the shocking state of our health, particularly here in NZ; and what you can do about it.

The best investment you can make is not in shares or property or gold. It is in your wellness. Your wellness status will determine how you approach life, how you feel, the quality of your relationships, how you perform, how you age and your impact on the world. bewell is not just about the absence of disease and getting through the day. It is about abundant health, boundless energy, zest for living and enjoyment of life.

This website contains information of the variety of services and programs offered and their pricing. I would encourage you to read the the other articles in this section. They contains some disturbing statistics and health predictions, their causes and why they will continue to rise. You are part of these statistics. It also explains why more and more our health system is failing to address your health, with its focus on disease and a drug response to symptoms.

Welcome on a journey that will maximise your wellness potential, but be warned, this is not a quick fix of symptoms. It is a full analysis of your wellness status, based on a wide range of tests and the development of an individualized plan to take your body to its full wellness potential.

Causes of Disease

When a well-packaged web of lies has been sold gradually to the masses over generations, the truth will seem utterly preposterous and its speaker a raving lunatic.

Dresden James

The following are some key changes in our environment that affect our health:

Depletion of Nutrients in the Soil
Modern farming methods have severely depleted the mineral levels in the soil. If it is not in the soil, it is not in the plant, it is not in the animal and it is not available for us to ingest. Our bodies are not getting the minerals they need.

Dietary Choices
Human evolution has occurred over 5 million years. For much of that time, the diet remained relatively stable. Our bodily systems have evolved to a hunter and gatherers diet. In a short period of time, we have moved away from this, now consuming predominantly “dead” food, lacking in key nutrients, needed for bodily processes.

Absorption/Digestion
In many cases we are unable to properly digest our food and absorb nutrients, even if they are present in the food, due to low stomach acid, insufficient digestive enzymes or because of conditions like leaky gut syndrome.

Toxins
Our bodies are being bombarded with an ever increasing number of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, heavy metals, colourings, preservatives and other toxic substances. We put them on our face, in our mouth, on our clothes, in our houses and in our workplaces. One study found 287 toxic chemicals in umbilical cord blood (217 were known neurotoxins, 208 were known to cause birth defects and 180 were known carcinogens).

Channelopathy
What is this? This is what is happening at a cellular level in your body. Key nutrients are being stopped from entering the cells and the cells are starving.

Inflammation/Oxidative Stress
Inflammation can be caused by a wide range of factors, including underlying diseases, parasite buildup, oxidative stress, allergies, physical and mental stress and other body stressors. Some authorities think that inflammation is at the root of all disease. It is one of the prime causes of aging.

Immune Dysfunction
A compromised immune system cannot protect the body and allows diseases like cancer to gain a foothold. Diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis are examples of the immune system attacking the body that it is supposed to protect.

Sex Hormone Imbalance
Do we age because our sex hormones reduce, or do our sex hormones reduce because we age? Hormones are key messengers and protective agents. As they reduce, we lose drive and disease increases.

Gastro-intestinal (Digestive) Problems
It is said that disease begins in the gut and there is much evidence to support this. 80% of your immune system is in the gut. The bulk of your happy hormone is made there. A poorly functioning gut can lead to a variety of conditions, from allergic reactions to mental illness. Over 75% of people have gut issues.

Thyroid dysfunction
A prominent endocrinologist has suggested that up to 60 % of people have an underactive thyroid. This can give rise to weight issues, lack of energy, feeling the cold more and impact on other bodily functions.

Stress Response dysfunction
Humans have always had to deal with stress, but the nature of the stress has changed. Previously there were short periods of stress, now the stress is repetitive and prolonged. The body was not designed for ongoing stress, which can over time disturb sleep patterns, rob energy and cause disease.

The above factors play a major role in the diseases that our disabling and killing us. The body is willing and able to fight its way back to wellness, but only if it is allowed to. The body gives clear indicators that things are not well and it is heading to dis-ease. Generally we do not know what these signs are, how to look for them, or what to do about them. Here, at bewell, our programs are aimed at evaluating key health markers and determining their status. The results are used as a basis to fight dis-ease and attain wellness. We focus on underlying causes, not just the symptoms.

Current State of Wellness

It is not a sign of good health to be well adjusted to a sick society.

J. Krishnamurti

Here are some statistics that you might find disturbing about our country:

  • The worlds highest rates of bowel cancer in women. Three to four women die a day.
  • Second highest rate of strokes in the world
  • Second highest rate of hip fractures in the world
  • One of the highest rate of obesity worldwide.
  • Fourth highest rate of diabetes
  • Fifth highest rate of breast cancer in women
  • Sixth highest rate of heart disease in the world. Every 90 minutes a New Zealander dies from coronary heart disease.
  • One in five New Zealanders older than 15 smoke cigarettes. Approximately 12 people a day are dying as a result of smoking.

Now, here is a really scary statistic. Did you know that on average a person in Australia (NZ figures not available) spends 12 years in dependent care before they die.

Worldwide:

  • Cancer, heart disease and diabetes account for 7 out of 10 deaths in the U.S. These statistics are mirrored in the Western world.
  • Alzheimer’s disease is the fourth leading cause of death. It is expected to quadruple over the next 50 years.
  • Cancer is increasing at 15% per year.
  • Depression affects one in four people. This is expected to double by 2030.
  • Between 1990 and 1998, diabetes increased 70%. It is expected to double in the next two decades, increasingly affecting younger people.
  • Our children are the canaries in our coal mine: 1 in 10 can be expected to get ADHD, 1 in 6 asthma, 1 in 80 autism, 1 in 6 behavioural disorders, 1 in 5 eczema and 1 in 3 allergies.
  • Adrenal fatigue, infertility, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia and a host of other conditions are all on the increase.

Do you find these facts disturbing? How many people do you know who fit into the above statistics? What are you doing so that you are not one of these statistics? You have a high chance of dying of a disease but what about before you die; the loss of independence, the loss of faculties, the discomfort and the price on your family. Extension of life, cognition and health in life is very achievable.

Why Choose This Path

One only sees what one looks for. One only looks for what one knows

Goethe

If you have read the section on Causes of Disease, you will have an understanding of how this path is different to the conventional approach. For example, if you are suffering from migraines, the conventional approach will be to give you drugs to control the pain. Research has shown that migraines have a multitude of causes, including hormone imbalance, neurotransmitter imbalance, digestive issues, malfunction at a cellular level and mineral imbalances. Taking the drugs may well assist with controlling the pain, but will it get to the root of the problem? No, and there will invariably be side effects. At bewell, we investigate the root issues and addresses them in a natural and holistic way.

Alternatively, you may be in average or good health and you seek to improve it and avoid the diseases discussed. You will only be as well as your weakest link. For example, you may be eating a healthy diet, exercising, sleeping well and doing everything right, but a single exposure to a heavy metal, such as mercury from a broken thermometer or from fillings in your mouth, could be driving you down the path of dis-ease.

You may just want to retain your youthful looks or turn back the clock in terms of how you look, feel and perform. Again, the choice is yours, you can take the path of lotions, creams, Botox, laser surgery and plastic surgery to create beauty externally or work with your body to create beauty from the inside. Some people pursue both paths and this is their choice.

You may want to maximize your sporting potential or the time you spend on your fitness program. You can increase your fat loss, increase energy for training and increase your endurance. There are nutrients and herbs that have been proven to do this.

The programs offered at bewell includes a large number of questionnaires and tests to measure the wellness of various systems and bodily functions. This provides a basis for determining your current wellness and the path to maximizing your potential wellness. They also provide a benchmark for the future.

If you want a one session, quick fix, we can do that and give you a natural alternative to many drugs, but we advise treating underlying causes rather than symptoms. We strongly recommend the generic wellness program or one of the specific programs to achieve your health goals. In the wellness program, there are a minimum of two sessions, interspersed with tests and analysis of results, culminating in a treatment/wellness plan. Yes, you can just have one off tests, but remember you will only be as good as your weakest link and the program is designed to look at you as a whole.

The testing protocols used are backed with scientific research and fully backed by reputable research companies, who will provide second opinions and alternatives.

This health pathway is inclusive seeking to include health professionals of your choice. Your GP should play a role, particularly if serious conditions are identified.
