It was a Monday morning at bewell, and I was in-clinic with Maria and her mother Meg. Maria was a loving daughter who wanted the best for her mum. Meg was a 75-year-old widow.
It did not take long to work out that being here was not Meg’s idea. We talked. I learnt that Meg had many wishes. I call them goals. She wanted to go to the toilet every day, have more energy, more motivation, get her blood pressure under control, get rid of her rash, less joint pain, more mental clarity. …..
I asked her what she was doing to achieve her goals. It turns out that she was on 8 medications. Interestingly 3 of them were to control side effects of the others.
I asked what she was doing to maintain her wellness. She itemized organizing home help, getting a meal delivered, paying for a gardener, taking her medications….
“And how is it going?” I asked
“Not well”, her daughter chimed in.
“I am 75 years old, what do you expect?” Meg responded.
I cut in, “More, so much more. Please do not use age as an excuse for not giving your body what it needs or taking away barriers for healing. Yes, it takes more effort, but it is so possible”.
Meg had been a gardener, as had I, so it made it easier. I asked, “What does a plant need?”
“Sun, water, soil, nutrients, love”
“So, no beta blockers, no statins, no …. How do you know if the plant is getting what it needs?”
“You test of course”.
“Well, why do we not test you?”
“Okay” – Game on. Maria smiled.
We had Meg’s questionnaire with much of her information and had already prepared the appropriate tests for her. As the testing proceeded, she got more and more interested.
Meg was low in some key minerals, was acidic, high inflammation, low oxygen, heavy metals…… I asked her what effect that would have on a plant. She smiled.
I invited Meg to make a key decision. She could plan for her deteriorating health and put support structures in place or fight to retain her God given right to health and vitality.
She looked at me with a fixed stare and said, “Let’s do this”. Maria smiled.
The first consultation was taken up with testing, both in clinic and in the lab.
The second consultation was the feedback session where we went through in detail the underlying imbalances that were giving rise to Meg’s symptoms. Her rash was coming from a food allergy. Her joint pain was coming from her own immune system attacking her body. Her constipation was coming from years of eating the wrong diet and from her drug regime.
Meg’s treatment plan outlined the things that she would need to do to achieve her goals: diet, lifestyle, supplements, movement. I emphasized to Meg that natural medicine was not a quick fix. Pharmaceutical drugs shut things down, so worked quickly, but only dealt with symptoms and all came with side effects. Natural medicine worked with the body and this takes longer, addressing imbalances that have developed over many years. It is about winning your body back.
Meg was a little overwhelmed with the number of identified imbalances and how many changes she would need to make in her life. We were happy to help, but Maria was the ideal person to fill this gap, to help make the changes in Meg’s time.
We saw Meg as scheduled in 8 weeks. She reported feeling a lot better. She was walking, gardening, seeing her friends and cooking again. She had ticked off three of her eight goals. We carried out some additional testing to ensure she was on track and indeed she was.
The next step was reducing the high toxic levels that had been identified in the testing process. Meg was hungry for this next step, as were we.
Fast forward 8 months. Meg had ticked off five of her eight goals. She was doing so well. She had got rid of her home support; and had met a man. Hmmm, this is above my pay grade.
Have you wondered why some people age better than others. Sure, genes have a role to play, but it takes environmental factors to turn on and off genes (Oops, a whole different article coming up). Each imbalance, whether it be heavy metals, acidity, toxicity, low nutrients, parasites, fungi, viruses, poor digestion, poor elimination. All these things will steal your wellness from you. Do not let them.
Got a call from Maria. Turns out she wants to start her own health journey early and avoid Meg’s journey. I have a feeling she will be an excellent client.
Natural medicine is not cheap or easy. The tests and medications that you get from your doctor have huge subsidies. We use these tests whenever we can, but there are other tests that give more targeted information and quality supplements are not cheap.
